I
have a tree I would like to nominate, how do
I do that?
In
the section "Nominate Trees" you
can click on the words "Nomination
Form" the form is in PDF and can be
downloaded. You can request a form using the
Contact Us section, or from Jim Grant,
Arkansas Forestry Commission, 3821 W.
Roosevelt Road, Little Rock, AR 72204,
501-296-1937/FAX 501-296-1949.
What
if the tree’s owner doesn’t want to
nominate the tree?
The
Arkansas Famous and Historic Tree Program (AFHTP)
is strictly voluntary.
What
can I do if the Tree’s health is in
jeopardy, or there are plans to destroy the
tree?
Contact
the Arkansas Forestry Commission for
questions about the tree’s health and what
to do about it. Remember, the AFHTP is
completely voluntary.
How
do I know if my tree or any tree is famous
or historic?
The
AFHTP established four criteria to determine
whether or not a tree should be recognized
as an historical tree:
-
Be
associated with a significant event in
local, state or national history
-
Be
associated with a significant person,
institution or landmark in local, state
or national history
-
Be
significant with respect to
horticultural, ecological or structural
characteristics for a local, state or
national region
-
Have
potential to yield significant cultural
information in local, state or national
history.
Generally,
a tree must be at least 50 years old to be
considered eligible for listing in AFHTP,
although there will be exceptions. Groups of
trees or tree communities may also be
nominated if they meet one of the four
criteria.
What
if I have or know about a huge tree?
There
is another program, Arkansas’ Champion
Tree Program, which recognizes the largest
tree in each species. If you think your tree
is the largest of its species in Arkansas,
contact the Forestry Commission and ask for
someone to come and measure the tree for
you.
Do
other states have Historic Tree programs?
Yes,
several states have historic tree programs.
American Forests manages the National Famous
and Historic Tree Program and sells
seedlings from some of the historic trees on
its list. For historic tree programs in
other states, go to the links section of
this web site.

would like to know more about the AFHTP
